Major Canals Of India
Canals are the second major source of irrigation in the country and irrigate more than 26.19% of agricultural land. Most of the canals of our country have been developed in the vast plains of the north and the areas of the coastal river deltas, because their construction depends on the continuous supply of water and available of flat land. The canals are mainly placed in two types-
1. Perennial canals which are drawn from the rivers flowing throughout the year water is always supplied to the canals.
2. Inundation or flood canals, in which continuous water supply is not possible throughout the year, and they are used only for irrigation during floods in rivers. Only one crop can be irrigation through such canals in a year.
